Aniline (C₆H₅NH₂) is a clear to slightly yellow oily liquid with a characteristic amine odor. It is a primary aromatic amine and an important industrial chemical used as a precursor in the manufacture of dyes, rubber processing chemicals, agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and polyurethane (MDI) production. Aniline is slightly soluble in water but readily soluble in alcohol, ether, and most organic solvents. It is reactive, especially toward oxidation, and must be handled and stored carefully due to its toxicity.
